> What is slowing down the process? Are you using the OpenLayers.js library as it was distributed, or the hosted version, or did you "build" the compressed version of the library? The compressed one loads a lot faster, particularly because it incorporates all 75+ libraries into a single file, saving your browser a lot of small downloads. That in itself may help significantly.
