This is a very interesting example, the application has really great response 
as well!  

However, I am having difficulty understanding where exactly the KML comes from 
originally, i.e., where is your source for your list of points of interest??

as a workaround i use a textarea, paste into it the contents of my KML and
then add it to the map. 
 
Likewise i use it to parse KML to fill a <select> element for places to
center. You can try it here:
