I can appreciate that. I just thought it worth pointing out you can get by without it in case no-one can provide a better answer.
I'm curious to see an answer to your question too. The save function I wrote is quite short and simple - it's just feature.attributes.xxxx = "xxxx" etc. and a couple of lines of standard AJAX.
