It can happen that OpenOffice on another operating system can open a stubborn file; a resave on that system will sometimes produce a good file. Another method (useful mostly for text files) is to use an archive utility such as WinZip to open the .odt file. Content.xml in the archive contains the unformatted text, which can be extracted, inserted into a new blank file of the correct type and (usually) speedily reformatted.
