That doesn't make sense. If you can open OpenOffice, then you should be able to open MS Office files. Is it in fact installed? Can you actually open the program by clicking on it's icon? When you're trying to solve a problem, keep things simple to eliminate other issues. So:
1) Click on an OpenOffice icon. 2) When it opens, use File>Open etc. to find and open a document. If you can't do that, then you've got some problem that needs to be resolved.
