Also, back in the day (Win 95 & ME) a program called Tweak UI had a feature to let you remove entries from the add/remove list if the uninstall was broken.

Not sure if that program is around for XP or not.

I have a program called X-Setup Pro (I don't know where I downloaded it, but it is free, probably downloads.com or pcworld.com) and it has a add/remove program list editor.
