hi bob

couldn't you use the cell number instead of the field? say 'D35' instead of 'total'?

I have a Writer document with a table in it, and a figure in the last cell that is the sum of the cells above it. That number has been set as Insert|Fields|Other|References|Set Reference and given the name "total". On the second page of the document, not in a table, there is text saying "Total: <value>" where "<value>" is a field inserted as Insert|Fields|Other|References|Insert Reference, with "total" chosen, and Format|Reference. So far, so good. The numeric value appears as expected after the word "Total:".

But now I'm trying to use that value in a formula in another field, call it "Grand total", which is, say, (total * 1.1). Is that possible? I've tried Variable|Insert foumula, but can't get it to use one of the previouly defined fields ("total"). Hopefully I've just missed something simple. Could not find it mentioned in the help.

For now, I've worked around it making a second table, and used table formulas, which can access values in other tables. But it won't always be appropriate to use another table.
