Unless setting umask was in the installation GUIs and just got clicked
through, no.

I don't know how to decide where "the bulk of the files" are installed.

The example path does not exist as such. Searching from root and showing
hidden files and folders, non-case-sensitive, does not give an
OpenOffice_1.1.4 folder.

It does say something about setting permissions at the beginning, no
details. I am not yet a Linux geek, just working on it. Anyway, it seems
that permissions for every thing else are just fine, since everything
but Help works.
On invoking Help, the usual help window appears, blank, except for the
following precise message in the right hand pane:
The requested document does not exist in the database !!
Perhaps the permissions for the help files need changing. Where are
they; what are they called??!!
