The dot is probably OOo showing you non-printable characters. In the
main toolbar (on the left side of the screen by default) there is an
icon of a paragraph symbol called Nonprinting Characters On/Off. Try
clicking on that and see if the dots disappear. If the icon is not
visible, right click on the main toolbar and select Visible Buttons.
Then click on the Nonprinting Characters On/Off. A check mark will
appear next to that icon and it will be added to the toolbar.

from a friend, and all the spaces in the document showed up as a "dot". Not
a period, but a dot. She said that she didn't type it that way, but that's
