FWIW, using additive and substractive methods is presented in
http://tinyurl.com/5u8bt in tutorial form and may help you with the
verbal instruction you got in the previous message. No guarantee or
warranty, of course :-)

Thanks, G. Actually, I figured out how to make the figure by going around the outside, then drawing the inside figure over it. I made the inside figure transparent, and the outside filled, then selected both and used the Shapes->Subtract function on it. That worked very well, but is not as simple as the "ribbon" model. Perhaps I can do what I want with a different drawing program.
