Without my knowing consent, OO 2.0 installed itself on
my computer, overriding OO 1.whatever-I-had.

When YOU installed 2.0beta, part of the installation process asked you if you wanted it to import update your 1.1.x installation with this new version. You must have answered with the affirmative or chosen the default. It helps to pay VERY CLOSE ATTENTION when installing any new software.

My
computer started behaving very, very badly. After
repeated, failed attempts to restore my XP SP2 machine
to a workable, earlier state, I finally gave up and
uninstalled OO 2.0 then downloaded and installed OO
1.4.1. Now NONE of my documents are "visible". When I
attempt to open a document all I get is a blank page.
The file listing indicates it's full o' bytes but
nothing is displayed.

If you had read the release notes, you would note that the new version of OOo uses a different file format (as default) than 1.1.x did. It will read and write the older format, much like it will read/write MSOffice formats. If you saved in the new format, 1.1.x will not read those documents.

I find it hard to believe that OpenOrg would inflict
upon me, without my explicit consent, a beta version
of software that can do so much damage.

As others have mentioned on this list, OOo 2.0 is not yet at final release status, and should not be used for production work, unless you are willing to risk losing your data or having it unusable in a prior version. If you have followed the development process for the new version, you might have noticed that the file format has changed *twice*, not just once. Those who used the first new format for production are now totally stranded, because neither 1.1.x nor 2.0 beta will open those files. Just *read the documentation!*

I am a newbie
to open source, have been using using Firefox and OO
only a short time and have been singing their praises
to anyone who'll listen but this OpenOffice nightmare
leaves me stunned. This is not the friendly kind of
foxy penguin love fest community experience I
expected. PLEASE help me get my files back. And please
don't install anything without my permission.

Thank you to anyone who can help.
