In which version of Excel is this? In the version at our office (Excel 2003) this is not true. Sumproduct gives you the sum of the product of the matrixes you give as parameters. For example:

SUMPRODUCT forces array semantics, and is sometimes used just for that, with a single argument. The result is the same as if SUM had been used and entered as an array formula. Yes, OOo 2.0 Beta supports this.
