Ok, in that case, do this:

Insert->Field->Variable

Under Type, select Number Range, then choose your number format
then under the Name box, type in your new type name...make it Illustration 
or Figure. Then press "Insert". This will create a "counter" in your 
document that will get incremented everytime you add to it.

Now when you create references for your pictures, make sure you use this new 
type.
