The crop dialog is the only way I know off. For "normal" pictures this is "good enough" (I agree not perfect!). If you need pixel by pixel cropping, better use an image editor and then copy back into OOo.

What about images that are already within documents that you are working with?
I ran into this with some MS docs that were being worked on in OOo. The images needed to be cropped (showed up okay in Office) to work in OOo. didn't have the original images. I couldn't find any way of getting the images. I have yet to try the idea of saving the document as a RTF file.
