I still recommend filing an issue as the first step. Your idea has value which is why I suggested filing. By filing you also preserve the idea so it doesn't get lost. Developers actually do look at RFEs although with trying to get 2.0 out the door they may be a mite busy. I know the help doc team is.
Once you have an issue in place, I would try the discussion in lists where there are likely to be developers, such as discuss, dev et cetera. In fact [email protected] may be the place.
In any case, discussing the technical merits of any idea on users is a bad idea when it can go on. Well you get the idea.
Do let us know the issue number here so those interested can vote, comment, help get it evaluated and implemented if possible.
I'm not sure I will file a RFE, since technically the reason for the problem was my own lack of finding a feature which exists and is in fact documented. The question is whether the feature exists in the right place and if its documentation is adequate, and I'm not clear on how I feel about that yet. With this nebulous stage of things, my feeling, evidently different than yours, in that informal convo at a lower level, ie this list, is preferable to bothering the developers. If that's out of line please let me know.
