You are reasonably correct, after all, those who feel like testing 
this stuff really should be familiar enough with the tools available 
and can figure it out on their own.  However, when it has progressed 
to the download and install for Dick and Jane as a full release 
stage, concerns such as this probably need more attention. (Which, 
its been my experience has been worked out nicely for previous full 
releases.)

FWIW, now that I've thought about it, the use of a packager such as 
rpm will allow dependencies to be tracked much easier.  But, not all 
distros use rpm.  But thats another subject.
