I'm using OOo 1.1.4 with Windows XT. I do a lot of scientific and engineering writing, so I tend to sprinkle a few Greek characters in my writing. At the moment I have my default font set to Bitstream Vera Sans, because it has (AFAIK) an open licence and it looks nice. My problem comes in inserting Greek characters: When I use the Insert->Special Character map in OOo I have a very limited palette of Greek characters, and these characters do not survive the transition to other fonts. Surprisingly enough, however, if I use one of the fonts supplied by Microsoft such as Arial or Courier New to lay down a Greek character, then change the font to Bitstream Vera Sans the character is rendered correctly _and_ it is robust to font changes.

Does anybody know why this is? Are there better open-licence fonts to use for this purpose than BVS? Is there some better way of selecting Greek characters?
