It depends upon what version of OpenOffice.org (OOo) you are using.
In the version 1.x, statistics including word count are found by
selecting the following in the order given: File > Properties >
Statistics Tab.
If you are going to submit this story, make sure you use the "Save
as" function to save it in a *.doc or *.rtf format. (In version 1.1.4,
*.pdf might work quite well also.) Anyway, check with the publisher
first to find out what format he requires. Doing it this way will save
time and aggrevation.
