Yes--this is the whole foundation of open-source software---freedom in
how you use it and get it supported (And usually also free in cost).
You may get resistance from the IT department because they may see it as
threatening their power base. Their relationship with Microsoft will
also be a factor---as a minimum, MS will tell them all the risks of not
sticking with tried and true Windows and Office.
