Although Open Office adds new features with new version releases, it
does not break document compatibility. This is because there is no
financial incentive to Open Office to force people to upgrade, as is
the case with another popular office suit.

It's the same format. You can exchange documents with OOo 2.x users
without forcing them to upgrade.

If you save your files as .doc format for compatibility with MSO
users, then beware that OOo 2.x does not have the same level of .doc
(specifically .docx) as does the 3.x branch. OOo 3.x uses the ODF file
format version 1.2, which is backwards compatible with previous
versions, but has a new formulas, charts, and notes features. Some of
these features may or may not display properly in OOo 2.x. In any case
2.x will not be able to edit these features. If there is something
very specific that you need, then either test it and report back, or
ask and I will try to test it for you.
