It pretty much eliminates accidental changes to the file.

It makes it tough to willfully change the file. (Adobe ain't cheep)

All most the entirety of the Internet users can print it.

Sometimes the pdf file is smaller than the original file(s) used in making it.

If the file is destined to another for printing, PDF is the choice.
If the file is destined to the 'no change allowed' shelf, same.
You get a file that can have lots of eye candy, can be fully text searchable and is very hard for all but the very few to mess with.

Don't get me wrong - nothing made by mankind is perfect. But PDF is the best choice for it's niche.
