When I changed the file format to .XLS the save/auto save was over in a

and times when you rather it didn't

It's not the zipping and unzipping that takes most of the time. My
machine can unzip the 85+ MB OOo download in a few seconds. The time is
spent constructing the incredibly verbose plaintext XML format.
