I think it is common practice, to save a backup file
in a different path.   ;-)
Anyway - you're free to change the path:

Tools | Options | OpenOffice.org | Paths ->
select <Backups>
choose >Edit ...<

But I don't know, whether that will result in difficulties
regarding the AutoRecovery function.
And at the moment I can not verify this question
due to an issue in OOo 3.0.0  ->
