PS. I know that I can have a macro on the toolbar if the command is not

I assume you are using OOo 3.0.
If you select a block of text and then go to the bottom of the screen
just to the left of the INSRT or OVER depending if you insert or
overwrite you shoud find the language of the particular block of text
select the language and you should have a number of options one of which
should be "NONE (Do not check spelling)."
Can you please let me know if this works on your version of OOo
