When I downloaded openoffice, I got a pop up screen saying your program might be harmful to my computer, unless I know the publisher.

That's a standard message that usually appears whenever you try to open something you downloaded from the internet. The computer is basically saying : "I don't know if I should trust this, so be sure that you do". It's a valid message, saying that it is up to you to decide what you trust on the internet. But OpenOffice.org has been around for a while and has gained the respect of people all over the world, so in this case you can certainly trust the site and the program.
