Carl,

You are confusing a couple different things here.

Windows Vista does not restrict you from installing and using any
"correctly" created software, free or otherwise. So the answer to your
question is, yes you will be able to install OOo (OpenOffice.org).

You refer to "Windows Home and Student", by which I think you mean
"Microsoft Office - Home and Student Edition". If you install OOo, you
should not need to buy the Microsoft program, because there are very few
features in MS Office that an inexperienced user would need to use, that
cannot be done equally well using OOo. The best thing to do is to
install and try OOo and if you believe it lacks features that you need,
you can always buy and install MS Office. Both programs can coexist on
your computer without conflicts.
