Richard,
I have just tested this issue on my network here OO 3.0.0, when I have
the file open on one machine and attempt to open the document on another
machine I get a dialog asking if I want to open as read only or open a
copy of the document.
Maybe the issue is because you have different versions on the other
machines. And there is a lock file created when I open the file.
I hope you can resolve this.
Sorry I could not be more helpful

It used to be that when a file was being used from a file server at a
work station, should someone else open the same file, editing would be
impossible to do, as the file was already open on another workstation.
I have only updated my workstation to version 3 and the other machines
in the office use 2.4. I can now open a file from the file server and
edit this file while it is being worked on at another work station
causing serious issues on the final document.
Is this a known issue and obviously as with the auto save on the
previous v 3 we would suggest as serious.
No response from anyone from OOo? Im not sure we are not going backwards.
