[users] need some help with installation

Hi,

I just downloaded the current version of OpenOffice 3.01 for Mac. I am
running OSX 10.5.6 on an iMac. When I try to open a pre-existing  
document
(Word .doc) I get the deadly twirling pinwheel with the recurrent alert:
Alert - Couldn't Contact Spell Checker
And the app freezes there.  Any advise would be appreciated.
