If the OOo user does a File > Export as PDF, or a File > Save As selecting the appropriate .doc format (also making sure the automatic file name extension is selected), the file can be printed from whatever PDF viewer is available or from Word, respectively. Otherwise, the recipient needs to install either OOo (the best optiion) or the Office plugin for ODF files from Sun; both are free. Here's the link for the plugin:
