Well, here it is a year later and there's still no solution to my problem:
when I open OO the main screen opens in BIGGER than full screen mode,
requiring me to manually resize the screen to a reasonable size. It thinks
it opens in non-full-screen mode and clicking the 'full screen' middle
square button on the upper right of the window makes it SMALLER.
This is maddening. Is there a setting somewhere that gives the opening
screen geometry?

If deleting/renaming your profile doesn't work, then your basic install

What linux are you running
slackware 11, fvwm95
and what version is your OOo?
2.4.0 Files in the install directory are dated March 14, but the soffice
link is dated March 28. I updated as soon as urged.
Note: just doing the about OOo won't do, go to where your OOo is
installed and look for versionrc - open that and report back the info
in the file.

And perhaps start a new thread? :-)
Sorry, I just changed the subject before. All better now.

None of those wavs are anything I ever acquired or even heard of.
Sorry, I'm not familiar with slackware. However *none* of those wav's
are included in any standard OOo package. See:
http://www.linuxpackages.net/viewpkg.php?id=11571
You are listing the *user* profile directory - meaning that at one point
or another, you, or perhaps an Impress/PPT slide show may have included
or used one of those wav's.
I suppose that's possible, but I've only seen a few PPT things (I only
know a few people who send them, thank god) and never heard any music with
them. That kind of makes sense, though. I'm going to delete them.
Rename bb:/root/.openoffice.org2/ to bb:/root/x-.openoffice.org2-x
and reopen OOo. I think that will solve your full screen problem.
I did that. Restarted. Rebooted X. Rebooted machine. Still comes up
"fuller" screen.
Also,
I'd recommend *not* installing the user profile directory as root
(.openoffice.org2), it should be in a standard user directory... you
aren't running as root are you?
Yeah, I am. I've done it for 10 years. It's a legacy from someone else
and I'm stuck with it. I have no user accounts. I've already been raked
over the coals by JWZ :-)
Hopefully someone with slackware experience will come along and assist.
Knock wood.
----------------------end old message----------------------
Bev, does the behaviour you describe above occur consistently - i e,
whenever you open an OOo service ? I've never seen this happen with OOo, but
sometimes with other programmes, most recently a web browser, but I only had
to resize it once and the difficulty disappeared....
Yes, every single time. I tried starting it with a -geometry setting, and it
just gave me a 'file not found' error :-(
And it's WORSE now. I just downloaded and installed 3.1 and can't start
anything or even find the new executable. /usr/bin/soffice points to the 3.01
installation. I seem to remember having difficulty with previous updates.
What am I missing?
OK, I restarted X and now 3.1 starts -- still in the bigger-than-full-screen
window, but I'm pretty relieved that it starts at all! And it does seem a
little prettier...

Bev
