Hi Andy, if you use the Go-OpenOffice (go-oo) from here http://go-oo.org/
that is the OpenOffice standard source for almost all the linux distros and that can be downloaded for windows too (win32), you can open Works document too as stated here http://go-oo.org/discover/#ms-works-import Furthermore in the go-oo home page you can see what other differences there are from the standard ("vanilla" said) OpenOffice.
