Hi Dayna,
You can add the category to the data labels in OpenOffice.org. Double
click the labels and check 'Show category' on the tab page called 'Data
Labels'.
Series names are currently not available. You are welcome to submit an
issue to request that feature:

Very likely with OOo 3.3 you will be able to add any text box to the
chart. That feature is currently worked on.
