I see two parentheses, correctly paired so something else must be wrong.
Any help here would be appreciated.
As an alternative, is there a way to issue the internal query that works
from within the Basic macro? Its name in the query group listing is
"AllSpeciesAllYears". If so where is that format for issuing a query
documented?

I resolved this problem by equating the SELECT statement to a string
variable and pointing the query at the variable rather than coding the
SELECT as a string in the query. That got rid of the syntax error
message. Now trying to issue the query from the macro; see the other
question I posted.
