Hi James.

I am writing a novel and, while backing up, I noticed that three of the

I have worked out that when you are working on a file, this ".~lock."
version of it appears, presumably to stop two users from editing it at
the same time. However, I have just turned my computer on, and there is
no reason to have locked files as neither I nor anyone else is actually
working on those files.

QUESTION 1
Why is this so? (is it a bug?)

At some point while you were working on the file OOo shut down
unexpectedly, leaving the lock files in place. You are correct that it
is to prevent more than one person editing the file at a time.

QUESTION 2
Can I delete these redundant locked file entries, i.e. the ones with
filename starting with: ".~lock."? (without losing data?);
- or -
will the ".~lock." entries simply go away when I next access the files
by the same name?

You should be able to delete the files without any bad effects, just
make sure you are not working on a file when you do it.

I would be much obliged for any advice on this matter.

Many thanks, James.

Hope this helps.
