for the OP, are using one of the *NIX versions?  The weird font names, as 
I understand it, are the result of Microsoft "owning" the more 
traditional names, thus fonts that mimic the MS ones, albeit with pretty 
weird names.  It is possible to add some fonts like Verdana, etc, but I 
forget how to do it it's been so long.  Perhaps one of the power users 
here can enlighten you/us.
