All of a sudden, I cannot open previously created or new text documents
saved as Open Office files or Word files. The desktop icons are blank, and
when I click them, it asks me what program I want to open them with. None of
them do, of course. I reinstalled open office, but no change. Same problem
if I use the drop down menu and try to open a Recent Document. The program
doesn't know how to open it.
Please help me figure this out.

When you first save a file, the Save As window opens. A little checkbox in the bottom of this window is labeled "Automatic file name extension". If this checkbox is not checked when saving a file for the first time, you will get this behavior. Assuming this is the problem, you will have to rename the files you previously created with the proper suffix: ".odt" for text documents saved in OpenOffice.org's format, and ".doc" text documents saved in Word's format. It would be better if you turned on viewing the file extension. Then you would see which saved files don't have a file extension.
