Thanks to all OOo Users who responded to my post about the following problem: When I select and Bold text, it is also Italicised and there is not way of having Bold without Italics - I (we, including several OOo gurus) have tired everything!

In the end, diagnostics pointed to a problem with system fonts. I went into (Windows XP) Control Panel > Fonts and deleted the hundreds of new fonts I installed from a commercial CD on the 1st May 2010, AND THE BOLD ITALIC PROBLEM WENT AWAY!!!

I would especially like to thank Dave Barton, Russell Butler, and Harold Fuchs who put quite a bit of time into researching this matter with me, including in the case of Dave and Russell, corresponding off-list and testing my documents and config files on their computers.

PROBLEM SOLVED!!! Thanks to all who added a piece to the diagnostic jigsaw, and I hope we can help someone else in the future if they ever encounter this problem.

Kind regards, James

Hi Russell

Thanks for your offer to help by looking at one of my files. I have
attached a Things To Do List, which is a table within a Writer document.
On my Windows XP machine, if I bold any text then it also becomes
italicised.

Many thanks,

James

OK James

On my system (OOo 3.2 on Ubuntu 9.04 AMD-64) I can't reproduce your experience, but I don't have Thorndale font. Changing (in Table Content Style) to Times New Roman, which I think it was using as a substitute for the missing Thorndale, behaviour is entirely as I would expect, using either the toolbar icons or Ctrl-B/Ctrl-I. Same if I do it to the already Bold/Italic headers.

Sorry, I haven't advanced things at all, except in a negative sense. Looks as though it must be something peculiar to your set-up.

I hope all those tasks weren't to be finished by the weekend ;-)

Regards

Russell
