My mother is legally blind and uses Dragon software to read e-mail and letters and compose stories on her old IBM Thinkpad via Word on MS Office, It was a frustrating learning curve for her to get used to it (need patience to train it to understand you) but it's quite functional. Don't know if it'll hitch to Open Office.
