Yet another styles question [this time brought about by trying to
include three envelopes in a document]:
After studying the Help, the wiki
<http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/FAQ/Writer/Printing/How_to_print_an_envelope_with_OpenOffice.org>
and numerous other sources, I cannot untangle styles-related conceptual
contortions on what should be a trivial word processing issue - in this
case, making/printing envelopes - and again find that none of the
sources clarifies the confusion. I hope someone here can.
(1) There is a page style "Envelope". Of course, an envelope is a hard
fit in a page class: it has a specific function beyond general pages
(the display of from/to addresses for the enclosed content) but lacks
other essential page functions (like paging or footnotes). However,
like a page, an envelope is essentially two-dimensional. So, like any
other OO page style, "Envelope" specifies a page size, either from a
list of predefined page sizes ("Format"), or user-specified ("Width" and
"Height"). Writer's default size for "Envelope" seems to be "C6/5"
(229x114 mm = 9.02x4.49 in), which is close to the US business standard
"#10" (241x105 mm = 9.50x4.13 in), but IAC is easily changed as needed.
But what /is/ needed?...
(2) There is an envelope wizard, "Insert|Envelope", which essentially
defines a style class for an envelope. It includes the essential
envelope attributes - the addresses from (Sender) and to (Addressee) -
defining both content (under the Envelope tab) and format (under the
Format tab). However, under the Format tab, it also defines the envelope
Size - with the same three fields as in the page style "Envelope":
"Format" (a pre-defined list as in the page style*), Width and Height
(the width and height defined by Format, or the user's settings for
"User-defined" Format). But these three fields are *different* from the
same three fields in page style "Envelope"! - even though, after
defining the envelope in the "Insert|Envelope" wizard, the page style is
now "Envelope". But the plot thickens...
(3) According to the wiki, the "Format" setting for (2) should /always/
be "DL" (actually "DL Envelope") - and then yet another such size
setting should be selected: Under the wizard's Printer tab, select
"Setup" to get to the (already selected) printer driver. Then
"Advanced" to select yet another paper size, from yet another list*.
That, according to the wiki, is how to do it, and woe betide one so
careless as to avoid all of these selections. ["Skipping steps 6 through
12 will cause you no end of problems."]
Finally, after all this manipulation in the "Insert|Envelope" wizard,
the page style is automatically set to "Envelope" - so there is /some/
connection between the wizard and the Page style - but the page size
("Format") settings to not match either of the settings in the wizard!
[* Despite some apparent connection (but what?) between envelope wizard
and envelope page style, each of the three page size (or "Format")
selection lists is different: one list for the page style, one list for
the envelope wizard and one list for printer driver. So the differences
are not only are in the settings, but also in the predefined choices of
settings!]
Making and printing an envelope - or even multiple envelopes for one
document - should be straightforward, not convoluted. What am I missing?
