The problem is not a bad install of Openoffice, the problem is caused by
the file associations not being properly set up - which is caused by the
fact that the developers, in all their wisdom, decided to remove the
ability to associate Microsoft Office files with Openoffice in the GUI
installer.

What the OP needs to do is create a shortcut to the installer with
/msoreg=1 as an argument. Yeah, good luck with that.

Ok, so just re-associate the files one by one using the right-click >
'Open with' dance - oh, right, that won't work for templates...

This is generally only necessary for software that installs drivers -
like, for example, Antivirus software.
