I have lots of cross-references in my documents, mostly to chapters,
things like "for an explanation see section 3.2.4". Now I have only been
able to do that by first creating a bookmark on the heading of the
referenced chapter, giving it a name and then creating a cross-reference
to that bookmark, which somehow does not feel right. There must be a way
of selecting just the chapter without that extra step or mustn't there?
I end up having to add bookmarks to almost all my headings which can't
be right.

You may want to check out OutlineCrossRef3.sxw available from
http://homepages.paradise.net.nz/hillview/OOo/
This document contains a macro to do what you want, except instead of
using bookmarks it uses set references.
Thanks, Ian
