I thought about recommending OmniPage as well, but then I remembered the quality of the product and the non-existant tech support. Caveat Emptor. There are better OCR products around.

If the OP actually *has* some OCR software, then sure, they should use that. It will give them the best results they can hope for considering what they're working with. But really, the OP should save in OOo's native formats and only export to PDF when required ( while keeping the original OOo files around ).
