Dear Alexandra, If you're using Windows, this might be the explanation.
It sounds as if you accidentally hit some combination of keys (Left-Alt plus Shift seems to be the default) that toggles between whichever keyboard layouts are installed. This problem is so common in my university, which teaches more than 30 languages and uses many more, that we have disabled that feature in our computer rooms; users now have to select from menus, so they can't do it without noticing. XP remembers which keyboard layout you are using for each application, so you can have, say, OO, Word and Notepad all open at once, and be typing with a French keyboard in one, an English keyboard in another and a Japanese keyboard in the third. Changing from one application to another automatically invokes the keyboard associated with the active application, which would explain why Hotmail didn't invoke the AZERTY layout but OO did. The solution is to put the cursor into whichever application is misbehaving, then look at the icon on your toolbar that indicates which language you are working in (e.g. "EN" for English). If it "FR" or anything else that you don't want, click on it and select the right one. Quite often, there is only one keyboard associated with each language, so simply changing language is enough. However, more than one layout can be assigned to a language. If it icon is "EN", but you are still getting AZERTY, the explanation might be that an AZERTY keyboard has been installed as an alternative layout for users who write both English-language and French-language text (perhaps for French-Canadians who prefer this layout to the FR-Can layout?), and you've accidentally hit the shortcut keys that switch to that. In that case, there should be a small icon of a keyboard next to the "EN"; click on that and select your keyboard.
