I dropped down to 1.4.2_09 and am still having the same problems. Are
there any types of field known to cause problems?

Andrew has reported that JRE 1.5.X does not work well with OOo. He
found using it caused crashes, etc. When he returned to using JRE 1.4.2
the same files caused no problems.
