Yes.  That is  what I have been doing, the first when I remembered, the second 
when I had forgotten.  
MicroSoft Word may behave  that way, but other software, e.g. Lotus, does not.  
As far as I am concerned 
that is  a bug.  Automatic filename extension ought to mean just that:  add  
the extension appropriate to  
the chosen  format.
