the file open dropdown does contain "OpenOffice 1.0 Text Document
(.sxw)", but it does not contain "StarWriter 3.0-5.0".
I will test again with the final release.

In the meantime i found out that OOo 1.1 has a batch conversion tool, so i
converted my StarOffice documents
to OOo 1.1 format, and now i can open it with 2.0 and the problem is solved for
me.

Have you tried opening writer and then going through the file->open procedure?

With OO 1.5 Linux or with OO 1.1 Windows i was able to open them.
Why does the new version not support it, or will it be supported in the final
