     Have you read the sections on numbering and lists in the Writer's 
Guide on the documentation page? It is also available right now at 
www.delewis.com/OOo/0200WG-WriterGuide.pdf. These sections are near the 
end of Chapter 7. I believe that the first section begins on page 193.
     The Writer's Guide was written originally in chapters on 1.1.x but 
tested on 1.9.x. Then the chapters were converted from *.sxw to *.odt 
using 1.9.x. All of the number was done using styles.
