Calc does have an exp() function for calculating the "exponent for
basis e". Are you sure that the cell was simply not large enough to
handle the result?

Interesting that it crashed. If you are using the newest version of
OOo, potentially you can file an issue and use the spreadsheet as an
example (especially if the problem is repeatable).
