With this in mind, can't the website provide an updated document to
explain how to properly hide blank merge lines? It's quite
frustrating to figure this out if you're new to OO. It took me
months, on and off, to get to an answer! Luckily I'm a patient man
who REALLY wants to avoid M$ products.
Did you search the online help? When I press F1 for Writer Help, and
enter "hiding" - "database fileds" as index entry to search for, I find
all the answers to your questions. (well, no warning not to use
backslashes in field names, sorry, but which database allows such names?)

Filemaker Pro allows many such characters that are not allowed in
Windoze, and almost the entire Mac platform allows similar characters in
file and field names. In any case, most of the fields from my FMP
database that I need to use regularly contain the "\" character. I
export to a CSV file, then use that as a data source for a variety of
merges. I can automate it, but since OO can't handle the "\" character,
I still have to go in and edit the "\" out of the field names. I'm
hoping I can do this via either calculated fields or a macro.
Oh, and if you read my posts, you'll see I did try every version of
help, FAQ, tutorial, etc., both online in the program and on the web.
All references still talk about using Hidden Paragraph tool, which
doesn't work with the "\" character AND in other situations.
