To make this clearer, the problem only occurs when the 3 letters are by
themselves in a spreadsheet cell. If I add a trailing space the problem does
not occur. For example, if I want column headings of JAN FEB MAR etc. they
come out as Jan Feb Mar etc.

When I type 3 capital letters that also happen to be an abbreviation
OpenOffice insists on changing it to first letter capitalized and the rest
lowercase. This happens even after I remove the word from
autocorrect/exceptions/abbreviations. I can't figure where it maintains
the list. XYZ stays, JAN becomes Jan.

It is kept in Tools-Options-Openoffice.org Calc-Sort Lists. You could
delete the list there; on the other hand you might find it useful some
time, so an alternative is to type 'JAN into the cell to force Calc to
accept it as straight text.
